1st December 2005 Newsletter

This is my first newsletter since starting the nursery in 1982. I just wish the internet was here then as this is much more personal than mail order.
Mostly this scribble takes the place of a shopping cart. It lets you know what plants are available and prices. Postage charges are so variable that I give a quote.

This is the time of year for the bareroot plants, mostly for farmers and country people. At the moment there are several schemes for farmers to reinstate hedges. Forty years ago there were grants for bulldozing them out! Now there are grants for planting them back again. They nowhere near cover the hard work and overall expense,. but as part of a larger picture, I hope it turns out to be worthwhile.

Now and until April I mainly sell four categories. Quickthorn, blackthorn, green beech and hazel. These are suitable for a hedge that gets trimmed annually The plants that make small trees, elder, rowan, lilac, birch, are more suitable for a hedge that grows into a windbreak. These also make a great home for wildlife, birds etc. Farmers and gardeners will often plant up an odd corner with this type of mix.
